Best practices

When to use

  • Use ease-out for user-initiated enter and exit animations such as Dropdowns, Dialogs, Tooltips, and Drawers; the fast start makes the interface feel responsive.
  • Use ease-in-out when an element stays on screen while moving or morphing, such as a layout shift, resize, or shape transition.
  • Use ease for gentle hover and color transitions. Avoid ease-in for UI feedback because its slow start makes the interface feel sluggish.
  • Use linear only for constant-speed motion, such as marquees, rotating objects, or progress that represents time passing.

Behavior

  • Keep product animations under 300ms: use roughly 100–150ms for micro-interactions, 150–250ms for standard UI, and 200–300ms for larger surfaces.
  • Use the same easing and duration for elements that move together, such as a surface and its backdrop.
  • Use a spring for gestures, interruptible movement, or intentionally organic motion; keep bounce subtle in product UI.
  • Prefer the shared custom easing tokens on this page when the built-in curves feel too weak, and tune a cubic-bezier curve only for a specific interaction.

Accessibility

  • Respect prefers-reduced-motion by disabling non-essential transitions and animations while keeping state changes clear.
